However, Guarnaschelli's cooking experience began earlier while watching her mother experiment with various recipes in her kitchen while editing cookbooks. Her career began under Larry Forgione before working in various Los Angeles, New York and France-based establishments. She was appointed chief chef of Butter. Guarnaschelli competed in 2007 Farmers Market Battle, a segment of Food Network's Iron Chef America, where she took on Cat Cora. In the years since, she's participated in the program as an guest judge. In addition, she competed at The Next Iron Chef Season Four in 2011 where she came in third. She also lost the Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast. After The Next Iron Chef's fourth season, she was made sous-chef for Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian. In 2008, she became the host of Food Network's The Cooking Loft with Alex Guarnaschelli in which she instructs the students in a small class instructing them on how to reimagine classic recipes.
